The legendary Pamir Highway – driven westward, the way the ancient Silk Road once flowed.

Most travelers on the Pamir Highway head east to west – from Osh toward Dushanbe. This tour runs the reverse: from Kyrgyzstan’s ancient trading city of Osh deep into Tajikistan, finishing in the Tajik capital Dushanbe. Same legendary road. A completely different first impression.

You begin in alpine meadows beneath the world’s most accessible 7,000-meter peak and end in a city of tree-lined boulevards and ancient mausoleums. In between: seven days of passes above 4,000 meters, nomadic yurt camps, hot springs along the Afghan border, Buddhist stupas, meteorite lakes, and mountain silences you won’t find anywhere else on Earth.

Itinerary

Leaving Osh behind, we drive through the fertile Alay Valley and over the spectacular Taldyk Pass (3,615 m), enjoying magnificent views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Passing through Sary-Tash and Sary-Mogol villages, we continue towards the stunning Tulpar-Kol Lakes located at the foot of Lenin Peak (7,134 m). Surrounded by alpine meadows, nomadic yurts and snow-capped mountains, this area is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Central Asia.

After breakfast, there is time for a short walk around Tulpar-Kol before we continue towards the Tajik border. Crossing Kyzyl-Art Pass (4,336 m), we enter Tajikistan and soon reach the magnificent Karakul Lake, a giant meteorite lake surrounded by barren mountains and glaciers. Continuing through the vast high-altitude plateaus of the Eastern Pamirs, we arrive in Murghab, the highest district center in Tajikistan.

Today we travel through some of the most remote landscapes of the Pamirs. Along the way we pass the sacred spring of Ak-Balyk and the broad grasslands of Alichur Valley where nomadic Kyrgyz families graze their herds. In the afternoon, we reach Bulunkul and nearby Yashilkul Lake, one of the most scenic alpine lakes in the country.

Crossing the remote Khargush Pass (4,344 m), we leave the Eastern Pamirs and descend into the legendary Wakhan Valley. The scenery changes dramatically as snow-covered peaks of the Hindu Kush rise on the horizon and traditional Wakhi villages appear along the valley floor. Afghanistan remains just across the Panj River throughout much of the day.

Today we explore the cultural treasures of the Wakhan Valley. Along the route we visit the famous Langar Petroglyphs, Vrang Buddhist Stupa, the House Museum of Muborak Wakhani, Yamchun Fortress and the Bibi Fatima Hot Springs. By evening, we arrive in Khorog, the capital of the Pamir region.

One of the most scenic drives of the Pamir Highway follows the Panj River along the border with Afghanistan. Throughout the day, we enjoy magnificent views of Afghan villages, cultivated terraces and dramatic mountain landscapes. Numerous stops allow for photography and interaction with local communities.

Our final day takes us through southern Tajikistan via Shurabad Pass and Kulob. Along the way we visit the Mausoleum of Mir Said Ali Hamadani, one of the country’s most important historical and religious monuments. By late afternoon we arrive in Dushanbe, marking the end of our Pamir adventure.
